Clothing fabrics: types and properties

kleding label

Let's be honest: when you buy clothes, do you pay attention to the materials they're made of? Before I entered the wonderful world of vintage clothing, I barely paid attention. But one thing is clear when it comes to clothing: materials and fabrics play a key role. They determine not only how a garment feels and drapes, but also how long it lasts. Let me explain what fabrics exist, what makes them so special, and how to recognize them.

First of all, fabrics can be divided into two main categories: natural and synthetic. Natural fabrics are derived from plants and animals and are known for their breathability and comfort. Synthetic fabrics are created through chemical processes and often offer cheaper, practical alternatives.

Natural substances

Natural fabrics are known for their breathability and comfort. Below, we discuss some commonly used natural fabrics and how to recognize them.

1. Cotton

Cotton is extracted from the seeds of the cotton plant and has been a popular choice for clothing for centuries.
Application : Widely used in dresses, shirts and trousers because of its versatility.
Features : Breathable, soft and skin-friendly.
Identification
: Feels soft and lightweight, with a matte finish. Often with a small label indicating 100% cotton.
Benefits : Durable, easy to maintain and comfortable in warm weather.
Disadvantages : Can wrinkle, prone to shrinkage and can wear out with intensive use.

2. Wool

Wool is made from the fleece of sheep and other animals such as alpacas or goats (for example, cashmere).
Application : Perfect for warm winter coats, sweaters and suits.
Properties : Warm, insulating and elastic.
Identification
: Feels soft but slightly stiff; often has a slight odor when wet.
Benefits : Retains heat well, regulates moisture and is wear-resistant.
Disadvantages : Can be itchy, prone to moths and sometimes difficult to clean.

3. Silk

Silk is produced from the cocoons of the silkworm and is one of the most luxurious fabrics.
Application : Often used for elegant blouses, dresses and accessories such as scarves.
Properties : Smooth, light and shiny.
Recognition : Feels cool and soft with a subtle sheen; if you wrinkle it, it quickly repairs itself.
Benefits : Feels luxurious, drapes beautifully and is breathable.
Disadvantages : Prone to stains, expensive and fragile.

Synthetic Fabrics

Synthetic materials are made through chemical processes, often using petroleum as a base. They are popular because of their low cost and specific properties. Here are some commonly used synthetic materials.

1. Polyester

Polyester is one of the most widely used synthetic fibers and is known for its versatility.
Application : Found in everything from casual T-shirts to sportswear and dresses.
Properties
: Wrinkle-resistant, colourfast and strong.
Identification : Feels smooth, often with a slight sheen.
Advantages : Affordable, easy to maintain and quick-drying.
Disadvantages : Less breathable and can give a plastic-like feeling.

2. Viscose

Technically, viscose is a semi-synthetic fabric made from chemically treated wood fibers. It's often used as a silk substitute because of its soft and natural look.
Application : Suitable for flowing dresses, blouses and skirts.
Features : Smooth and soft.
Recognition : Feels smooth, resembles cotton and silk but wrinkles more easily.
Advantages : Resembles natural fabrics, is inexpensive and versatile.
Disadvantages : Sensitive to shrinking and wrinkling.

3. Elastane

Elastane, also known as spandex or lycra, is used in combination with other fabrics to make clothing stretchy.
Application : Found in sportswear, jeans and leggings.
Features : Elastic and lightweight.
Recognition : Feels extremely stretchy and quickly returns to its original shape.
Benefits : Provides comfort and freedom of movement.
Disadvantages : Loses elasticity over time and is not durable.

4. Nylon

Nylon was originally developed as an alternative to silk and has since found many applications.
Application : Widely used in tights, sportswear and raincoats.
Properties : Strong, light and water-repellent.
Recognition : Feels smooth and slightly plastic-like, with a slight sheen.
Advantages : Very strong and easy to maintain.
Disadvantages : Not breathable and environmentally unfriendly.

5. Acrylic

Acrylic is a synthetic fabric that is often used as an alternative to wool.
Application : Widely used in sweaters, scarves, blankets and hats.
Features : Soft, warm and lightweight.
Identification : Feels soft and woolly, but slightly less natural than real wool. Often has a smooth, artificial texture.
Advantages : Cheap, easy to maintain and colourfast.
Disadvantages : Can pill (form lint), is less breathable than natural fabrics and is not biodegradable.

The difference between natural and synthetic fabrics

Natural fabrics like cotton, wool, and silk have been valued for decades for their quality and durability. In contrast, synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are often cheaper, but less environmentally friendly and sustainable.
